Paris, France - April 23, 2018 - For Immediate Release
Warren Walker and Federico Casagrande debut OddAtlas
The project is the brainchild of Warren Walker and Federico Casagrande. Despite being long time friends in the Paris, France music scene, OddAtlas is the first album they had the opportunity to create together. Joining them from New York were bassist and engineer, Sam Minaie, and drummer Caleb Dolister.
Federico Casagrande grew up studying classical guitar in Italy, transitioned to jazz and improvised music at Berklee College of Music in Boston USA, and has released 11 records as a band leader or co-leader.
The three other musicians on the project, Warren Walker, Sam Minaie, and Caleb Dolister all attended the undergrad jazz performance program at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Since graduating, Warren Walker traveled with his saxophone and effects pedals to Australia, China, and eventually landed in Paris, France where he formed The Kandinsky Effect, an electronic/jazz trio which has been touring globally for 10 years.
Bassist Sam Minaie initially moved to Los Angeles where he received his masters degree from the California Institute of the Arts and has performed with Tigran Hamasyan, Melody Gardot, and is now a regular in the New York jazz scene. He is also a talented engineer and producer, and runs his own studio from New York, Birdfood Studios.
After college, Caleb Dolister departed for Nashville, TN where he worked as a sideman and studio drummer. During those years, he made regular trips to Los Angeles to work on creative music projects with trumpet player Daniel Rosenboom, whom he had met through Sam Minaie. In 2009 he joined Warren Walker and became the drummer for The Kandinsky Effect, and later moved to New York in 2011.
The OddAtlas recording began simply as an experiment to see what would happen when Walker, Casagrande, Minaie and Dolister locked themselves in a remote mountain studio for a week.
The band arrived at the alpine studio as prepared as possible, but since everyone was coming from different locations, that meant there was just handful of odd compositions and untitled ideas, and a one week deadline to build something from nothing.
December 2016 was absolutely frigid in Chamonix. It had yet to snow and each morning the weight of the cold fog seemed to press all the sound out of the mountains. It was cold and silent.
But by the end of each day, the studio was warm from hours of amps radiating heat and the air radiated from the sounds of exploring musical directions. Within just a few days, the collection of ideas from different parts of the globe reached a full realization in a warm studio in the freezing Alps.
