Akashic Record

For over a decade, Akashic Record has been a crusader for organ driven funk and soul jazz in the Boston music scene. Their fourth release, Big Bang (Spring 2017, Ropeadope), carries forward their consistent approach of producing music that includes soulful melodies, virtuosic soloists and most importantly, a hard grooving rhythm section to ensure that you will be bobbin’ your head!  Big Bang is a follow up to their 2013 Ropeadope release Bring It Back, and features Brian Thomas on trombone, Jared Sims on baritone saxophone, Steve Fell on guitar, Peter MaClean on drums, Sam Gilman on organ and Darby Wolf on clavinet and piano.  Produced by Akashic Record, Big Bang was once again recorded by Craig Welsch (aka dubfader) at Rear Window Studio and mixed by the incredible Alan Evans (Soulive) at Iron Wax Studios.  “We love the basic sounds that Craig is able get. He is a true master.  Alan really completes our vision in the mix with his passion for funk and soul jazz.  It was really a priority to work with both of them again on Big Bang”, says AR trombonist Brian Thomas.

Originally from Rochester NY, Brian Thomas has been a member of the Boston music scene since graduating from Ithaca College in 1998.  He gained much of his “post graduate” music experience at Wally’s Jazz Cafe and working with reggae giants John Brown’s Body.  In addition to weekly pick up funk and jazz gigs in Boston, Thomas has also performed and/or recorded with Lettuce, Soulive, Maceo Parker, Ryan Montbleau, Jesse Dee and Pressure Cooker.  Thomas also co-leads the BT ALC Big Band and teaches at Canton High School in Canton, MA.

Jared Sims has played music on four continents. He performs regularly under his own name and with several other groups. Jared has more than thirty different albums crossing several genres and his studio work has been featured American and Japanese television as well as several video games.  He performs regularly in Pittsburgh, New York City, Boston, and beyond and is currently the Director of Jazz at West Virginia University.

Sam Gilman is a professional pianist and organist who has been playing on the greater New England music scene for the past fifteen years.  As well as playing in Akashic Record, he founded the band Otis Grove in 2004 and signed to Ropeadope Records in 2008.  Most recently, Sam has been touring nationally as a band member with New England Singer-Songwriter, Ryan Montbleau. On the side, Sam likes to keep his roots in the local Boston music scene, playing with bands such Otis Grove, Akashic Record as well as the Naya Rockers (Reggae) and the BT ALC Big Band (Funk Big-Band), which just released a new record this past fall.

Steve Fell is a Boston based guitarist working across a broad spectrum of music, from free improvised music and original forward looking jazz to hard driving organ funk, dub reggae, rock, and R&B.  As well as playing with Akashic Record, and it’s larger counterpart, the BT ALC Big Band, he is a co-leader of the jazz collective Clear Audience, which the Boston Globe describes as “among the most engaging and rewarding of Boston-based jazz aggregations” (Boston Globe 2015).  He can be heard on over a dozen releases and, in addition to performances across North America, has performed in the U.K., South Korea, and Japan.

Pete MacLean can easily win the title of “hardest working drummer in show business”! He is the newest member of Maceo Parker’s band and also one of the most in demand drummers in the Northeast.  In addition to Akashic Record and Maceo Parker, Pete plays with the A-Beez, Jen Kearney, Sam Kininger Band and the Nephrok All Stars.

He has played at many festivals, including Bonaroo, High Sierra Music Festival, SXSW, Wakarusa, All Good Music Fest, Camp Bisco, and the Gathering of the Vibes.
